UN International Day of Education 2022

posted: 24/01/2022

Today, 24 January, marks the United Nation’s International Day of Education.

In 2015, the international community adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, recognising education as an essential component to achieve its goals of ending poverty, protecting the planet, and improving the lives and prospects of everyone around the world. This year’s focus is to showcase the most important transformations required to realise everyone’s fundamental right to education and to build a more sustainable and inclusive future.

At Glencore, we are committed to working closely with the communities in which we operate, supporting local schools and education initiatives. In addition to programmes focusing on childhood education, we support programmes that promote further education and learning, supporting self-sufficiency and economic growth, beyond Glencore’s tenure.

We are proud to support the Professional Courses Learning Centre in Espinar, Peru. The Professional Courses Learning Centre offers courses to local adults in skills such as clothes making, livestock management, and kitchen assistance. Learn more in the video below to hear about Mari Luz and Emily, two of the programme participants. Mari Luz joined the training course to learn how to become a seamstress. With her new skills, she’s been able to start her own business from home, generating an income for her and her family. Emily completed a course on livestock management, enabling her to increase the size of her cattle herd by 10%.
